Spicy Fish with Star Anise & Soy Bean Recipe

There’s nothing quite like crispy salted fish drenched in a fiery, spicy, fragrant sauce over a bed of wilted pak choy. Honestly, it hits the spot every time and is my latest addiction.

Spicy Fish with Star Anise & Soy Bean Recipe

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 75 minutes
Serves: 8 -10


¼ cup lemon juice

1 tablespoon salt

½ teaspoon garlic

½ teaspoon ginger

1 teaspoon red chilli powder

1.5kg sole, cut into cubes 2’’ x 2’’

1 cup corn flour

3 tablespoon sesame oil

1/2 cup white onion

6 garlic cloves, crushed

1 tablespoon minced ginger

1 teaspoon crushed red chilli

1 teaspoon shichimi

2 tablespoons soy bean paste

3 tablespoon brown rice vinegar

1 tablespoon soy sauce

2 star anise

2 tablespoons sherry

2 cups water

1 chicken stock cube

2 packets pak choy, shredded and steamed.

How To Prepare – Instructions


  1. Marinade: Combine marinade ingredients and mix with the fish. Allow to marinade overnight.  Lightly coat fish with corn flour, place on an oiled baking tray and set aside.
  2. Sauce: Heat the oil over a medium heat and add onions, garlic, ginger and red chilli. Stir fry for about 2 minutes. Add Shichimi, soybean paste, brown rice vinegar and soy sauce and continue to cook on a medium to high heat for a further 2 minutes. Add the star anise, sherry, water and stock cube and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce to a medium to low heat and simmer for at least an hour to allow the sauce to thicken. Remove the star anise.
  3. Fish: To cook the fish, preheat the oven on the grill setting. Place the baking tray and grill the fish for about 10-12 minutes until cooked.
  4. To plate, place the pak choy on a plate followed by the fish. Pour sauce over liberally over the fish and garnish with the fried ginger, garlic and chopped green scallion. Serve immediately.
